Protective Coatings and Sealing: A Smarter Path to Asset Longevity

Category: Water and Wastewater

In today’s utility sector, the challenge of aging infrastructure meets the increasing pressure to deliver sustainable and reliable service, often without the luxury of large capital budgets. For asset managers operating under these constraints, the ISO 55000 framework offers clear guidance: focus on long-term value, proactive risk mitigation, and whole-of-life asset performance.

Chesterton’s ARC Industrial Coatings are helping utilities meet these goals by protecting and extending the life of pumps, pipes, pits, and other critical infrastructure, especially in harsh, corrosive environments. These ceramic-reinforced, high-performance coatings are engineered to resist abrasion, chemicals, and erosion—common threats to both metal and concrete assets. When applied proactively, they enable significant savings in maintenance, downtime, and replacement costs.

Why ARC Coatings?

Unlike traditional paints or epoxies, ARC coatings are designed for extreme-duty environments. They form a strong bond to substrates, providing a seamless and durable barrier that shields equipment from internal and external attacks. Common applications in the utility sector include lift station pumps, valve boxes, wet wells, effluent pits, and influent lines—all areas where corrosion and wear can rapidly degrade performance or lead to failure.

ARC products are widely used to restore worn components and prevent future degradation. When applied as part of a preventive maintenance strategy, they support ISO 55000’s emphasis on optimising life-cycle cost and asset reliability.

Case Study 1: Wet Well Lift Pump Restoration

A municipal utility faced severe corrosion in a sewage lift station pump after just 12 months of service. With performance dropping sharply and flow rates nearing critical thresholds, the team considered installing an additional new pump (estimated at USD 25,000) to maintain capacity.

Chesterton technicians rehabilitated the existing pump by grit-blasting, rebuilding damaged areas with ARC 858 composite, and coating all internal and external surfaces with ARC 855. The result? Complete restoration of flow performance at 35% less cost than replacement—delivering immediate savings and eliminating unnecessary capital spend.

Case Study 2: Influent Pipe Corrosion Control

At a primary wastewater treatment plant, condensation-induced corrosion on large influent pipes posed a serious risk. Replacing the pipes would require a plant shutdown and potentially impact the flow of over 500 million gallons of water per day.
Chesterton’s team cleaned the surfaces, applied ARC 797 primer, and finished with ARC S2, creating a robust barrier against future corrosion.
This solution avoided a high-cost shutdown, extended the asset’s service life, and aligned with asset management best practices by minimising risk and preserving critical functions.

Smart Maintenance, Sustainable Results

These two case studies illustrate a simple truth: proactive coating and sealing strategies not only prevent failures but also preserve asset value, reduce lifecycle costs, and enhance operational reliability.
