Issue

The pickling line in a steel mill’s wire rod plant faced problems with overhead crane/wire ropes being replaced every 27 days due to acid vapour corrosion. Acid vapour penetrated the core of the rope, severely weakening it and creating a safety hazard. The goal is to implement acid-resistant protective coatings to help prevent corrosion, extend the service life of wire ropes, and prevent abrasion.

Application

Location: Wire rod plant, overhead crane hoist.

Wire configuration: 6 x Fi (22+7).

Wire diameter: 10mm.

Length: 44m x 8.

Test method: Strand wire twist test.

Evaluation method: Remaining life is evaluated based on the number of twisting cycles, wire diameter, strand diameter, etc.

Products used: Chesterton® 601 Chain Drive Pin and 715 Spraflex® Adhesive Surface Lubricant.

Increase Reliability & Productivity

The existing wire rope had a 27-day replacement cycle. However, life measurements of the wire rope coated with Chesterton 601 and 715 Spraflex industrial lubricants showed that the 27-day cycle could be extended up to 54 days. Re-lubrication every 27 days was suggested to extend the life even further. The longer replacement cycles have brought production benefits by enabling the stable operation of the wire coils.
