Time-critical valve gland packing fix for oil and gas industry client


A high profile oil and gas end user urgently needed assistance with a Super High Pressure Steam valve gland packing sealing issue, for which they had no information about the valve dimensions or construction.  Chesterton was chosen to come up with a solution because of our work in North America, and the client had heard from our local Singapore distributor of our capabilities.

A Chesterton specialist flew to Singapore and spent three days working with the local distributor (SJP Sealing Technology) to prepare the stuffing box and manufactured replacement 1601/5300 packing combination.  Replacements were made and fitted within two days, with the third day watching the “warm up” to 510°C as part of the start up procedure.

Chesterton 1601 – superior leakage control for isolation valves/steam valves.

  • ​Layers of graphite tape are formed into compact strands; each strand is reinforced with an Inconel® wire mesh covering
  • Strands are square​ braided to form a dense, but pliable packing
  • A corrosion inhibitor is applied to prevent stem pitting

Chesterton 5300 – Self-lubricating, low friction, high purity, die-formed ring manufactured from pure graphite ribbon tape without any fillers, binders, or resins.

  • Produced to an accurate specific density for compression resistance, elasticity and size and shape retention
  • Can withstand temperatures to 2,760°C in a non-oxidizing atmosphere
  • Incorporates an inorganic, passive inhibitor that reduces corrosive properties of graphite


Our client was very happy with our responsiveness and thoroughness in terms of the repack procedure and rebuild capabilities.

The packing did not leak upon start up and continues to hold 100+ barg pressure at +500°C. The end user has invited Chesterton and SJP Sealing Technology back for their next shutdown.
