Sealing Improvement for Equipment Where Retightening is Not Possible
Challenge
Background
At a chemical plant, the vacuum dryer experienced frequent catalyst leakage from the shaft seal and required frequent gland packing retightening. Because the packing could not be adjusted while the equipment was operating, leakage occurred regularly.
Root Cause
Packing volume loss and insufficient pressure across the packing set.
Goal
Reduce the frequency of gland adjustments, eliminate leakage, and maintain stable operation.
The existing packing had hardened and lost its elasticity.
Solution
Recommended Solution
Chesterton 1724 and 1730SC were selected to minimise volume loss and reduce retightening. A bushing was also installed to reduce the packing set to five rings and improve pressure distribution.

After: Maintenance interval extended to 17 months.
Mean Time Between Repairs (MTBR): Increased by 560%
