Locomotives bogie bearings had to be frequently maintained due to poor lubrication caused by the use of a standard grease and its low resistance to water washout. The bogie’s steel wheels were exposed to high temperatures due to various ranges of friction. Also, exposure to heavy loads and muddy water, led to numerous and premature bearing failure.

The bearings of the locomotives were generally changed on average every two weeks due to wear, but with the Chesterton 615 HTG bearings, they wear only 1 and 1/2 months on average with continuous use. Bearing lubrication and repacking takes 3 days, while repair and replacement take a week.
