Reducing equipment failure in automotive plant

Auto manufacturing plants use air powered hoists to lift car panels, frames, and sub-assemblies. Air hoist failure due to lack of lubrication slows the assembly line. The plant has 20 failing air hoists that are only 6 months old however, due to the lack of lubrication, 40 new air hoists need to be purchased per year and 30 minutes is required for each hoist

Air Hoist Cost = USD1,800 x40 = USD 72,000/yr.
Labor Cost = USD 4 x40 = USD 160 / yr.

TOTAL Cost = USD $72,160 / yr.

Air hoist

In-line pneumatic lubrication was needed. The recommendation was to install in-line oil cups as part of the FRL unit. The lubricator was filled with Chesterton 652 Pneumatic Lubricant & Conditioner. 652 provides good lubrication without the sticky residue and varnishing that occurs with regular lubes.

FRL Unit Cost = USD 60 x 40 = USD 2,400
Chesterton 652 PL&C Cost = USD 2,850
TOTAL Cost = USD $5,250

More about the Chesterton 652 Pneumatic Lubricant & Conditioner:

  • Conditioners inhibit seals and O-Rings from drying out
  • Significantly reduces power consumption
  • Cleans rust, sludge, and dirt from all air tools as it lubricates

After installed FRL Unit and using Chesterton
652 Pneumatic Lubricant & Conditioner

After using Chesterton 652 Pneumatic Lubricant & Conditioner the customer reported

  • No air hoist failure
  • No replacement
  • No slip stick

Total Savings
USD$72,160 – USD$5,250 = USD $66,910

Eliminated Air Hoist Failure
