Preventing shaft wear using non-contact labyrinth seal

Due to a lip seal wearing out the shaft during usage, our client was forced to change both the lip seal and shaft after every shutdown. The root cause of this issue is due to oil seal fretting. Our objective here is to prevent shaft wear by using a non-contact labyrinth seal.

Our Chesterton speacialists suggested the following product to solve this issue:

Chesterton Split Polymer Labyrinth Seal (SPLS)

This product is a non-contact, split rotary seal for splash-lubricated bearing protection in large pumps, gearboxes, and other rotating equipment. This split seal reduces installation time while outperforming conventional lip seals in operation. This product also:

  • Reduces the chances of fretting caused by lip seals
  • Keeps lubrication in and seals out external contamination
  • Unitized design and durable material provide easy, reliable installation
  • Available in a variety of configurations to meet plant-wide equipment needs

Chesterton Split Polymer Labyrinth Seal

The new seal was installed  in March 2016. No issues have been reported as of December 2022.

Replacing the seal will cost approximately ¥1,320,000 (approx. USD 10,000), including unplanned work and labor.

Consumables cost ¥320,000 (approx. USD 2,500), including seals (regular oil lip seal)

By replacing it with Chesterton Polymer Labyrinth Seal, the cost of consumables increased to ¥350,000 (approx. USD 2,700). However, no subsequent repairs are required (no damage to shaft reported). Previously, unplanned maintenance was every 2-4 years.

Reduction of unplanned construction costs: ¥1,000,000 (approx. USD 7,500).

Consumable cost: ¥320,000 (approx. USD 2,500).

Total savings = ¥970,000 (approx. USD 2,500).

There is only a need to change the seal when the pump is under repair, as the oil lip seal does not leak. Before, shaft repair was required for each shutdown.
