Plant-Wide Bolting Improvements with Chesterton Industrial Lubricants

Issue
In refinery plants, heat exchanger channel covers need to be opened and inspected during shutdown maintenance. Until now, the channel covers of high-temperature, high-pressure heat exchangers could not be disassembled due to sticking bolts and nuts, resulting in significant cost losses.
783 ACR was applied to bolts and nuts in a refinery’s heat exchanger channel covers.
Solution
Application
The customer used Chesterton® 783 Corrosion-Resistant Anti-Seize (ACR) as a standard throughout the plant to help prevent further bolting problems. Given the refinery’s coastal location, water and corrosion resistance were critical, making Chesterton 783 ACR the ideal choice. The procedure involves loosening nuts with Chesterton 723 Sprasolvo® Penetrating Oil and applying Chesterton 783 ACR during assembly. All operatives work on-site with Chesterton 783 ACR in their toolboxes.
Results
Increase Reliability & Productivity
Of the 72 bolts on each side of the heat exchanger, 65 nuts came off without any problems. Seven bolts and nuts were sticking, but after applying 723 Sprasolvo Penetrating Oil, the bolts could be removed from the flange.
• Bolt cost saving for this heat exchanger area: $50,000 USD per shutdown.
• Labor cost saving: $48,000 USD.
