ARC HT-S ARC Abrasion Epoxy



The impeller of a centrifugal pump in an oleochemical application, required frequent unscheduled maintenance because of a build-up of Copper Chromate (catalyst) which had impacted into the surface of the impeller, gradually reducing internal clearances and putting an additional drain on the electric motor current until it tripped.
Consequently, production downtimes were very frequent as the impeller must be cleaned of the catalyst every three months.


The customer goal is to extend MTBF (mean time between failures), reduce maintenance costs and improve pump life span.

Root Cause

The built-in catalyst of the impeller causes the pump motor to overload due to lower impeller hardness compared to the catalyst.

Catalyst built up at Impeller (needle gun required)



  • Hot water steam pressure wash was needed to remove the grease from a newly machined impeller.
  • Grit blast to Sa 2.5 with 3mil (75μm) angular profile.


  • Apply three coats ARC HT-S to DFT(0.9 – 1.2mm) on the impeller, in the internal pump case and the backplate.
  • Dynamic balancing of the centrifugal pump impeller

ARC HT-S is A 100% solids glass/ceramic reinforced novolac epoxy lining for high temperature aqueous cold wall corrosion conditions.

ARC HT-S industrial coating/lining is designed to:

  • Protect and upgrade new and old metal equipment
  • Perform in immersed aqueous solution conditions up to 150°C (302°F)
  • Replace exotic alloys, engineered plastics, ceramics, and conventional coatings
  • Easily apply by roller, brush, squeegee, or airless spray​

By using ARC HT-S, the equipment service life is extended, reducing downtime. ARC HT-S provides long-term protection, eliminating under-film corrosion. Now scheduled maintenance is only necessary every eight months with a quantifiable cost reduction of 15%.

Additional Benefits

The built-up catalyst is now easy to clean by using water pressure washing. The previous process required cleaning with a needle gun.
