Extended Chain Life with Chesterton® 720 CCG at Terminal Port
Challenge
Issue
A marine port faced issues with their side loader chain used for lifting empty containers. The loaders, operating outdoors with inadequate lubrication, experienced a chain life of only 12 months, whereas the target lifespan was 2 years. Additionally, the port encountered chain breakages during operation, leading to container damage and significant safety risks.

Solution
Application
Firstly, old grease and oil residue were removed using Chesterton® 274 Industrial Degreaser. The pins, bushngs, and rollers were then prepared for the application of Chesterton 720 Chain, Cable, and Gear Lubricant (CCG). Secondly, given the severe operating conditions at the terminal port, Chesterton 720 CCG with Diluent was selected to waterproof and protect the chain from corrosion.

Results
Increase Reliability & Productivity
After six months of using Chesterton 720 CCG with Diluent, chain elongation measurements show no signs of wear. The chain remained free of rust and corrosion and maintained its flexibility around sprockets. It is expected that the lift chains will surpass the target lifespan of two years.
