Dewatering Screw Press Solution Increased MTBR and Improved Worker Safety
Challenge
A dewatering screw press was a struggle to seal because of the location. Many potential solutions have been tried but proven not to work. Leakage was causing premature bearing failures due to water contaminated grease in bearing casing and increasing the risk of injuries due to slippery floor. These issues, together with short Mean Time Before Repair (MTBR) were the main reasons to try something completely different.
Maintenance engineers reached out to Chesterton for a solution to create a safer work environment and increase MTBR.
Solution
The Chesterton specialist recommended a 14KL lantern Ring (AWC800) towards the box bottom, combined with a R22K (AWC800) behind the lantern ring. The initial trial was planned for a single setup; however, due to a second bearing failure occurring at the same time, the customer decided to order two setups, because they believed
in this concept.

Approximate cost of yearly premature bearing failures (annual cost includes labor and material on 4 presses): $12,000 – $18,000 (10,000€ – 15,000€)
Customer’s approximate total yearly cost savings (4 presses): $2,300 – $8,200 (2,000€ – 7,000€)
The return on investment would be achieved in approximately six months.
