This customer in the pulp and paper industry was forced to disassemble their pump regularly to replace the shaft and seal, both damaged due to shaft fretting. Their wanted to prevent this wear by using a new, innovative solution, and Chesterton recommended the Chesterton® PLS (Polymer Labyrinth Seal), made from our  patented AWC800 Material.

Chesterton® PLS



A white liquor return pump bearing housing was leaking oil due to the OEM oil seal fretting the shaft. The customer has to disassemble the pump regularly to replace the shaft and seal.

Root Cause

Shaft wear due to the OEM oil seal which causes the oil to leak.


Prevent shaft wear by using innovative sealing solutions, limiting oil leaks.

Chesterton® PLS—Polymer Labyrinth Seal

Made from Chesterton’s proprietary polymer material technology, the Chesterton, patent-pending Polymer Labyrinth Seal (PLS) is a non-contact bearing seal designed to provide protection for pumps, motors, gearboxes, and other rotating equipment in splash applications. The Chesterton PLS was installed in February 2016 and is still operational without any problems or maintenance needs. Previously, pump maintenance was performed every two years, but after installing Chesterton Polymer Labyrinth Seal in 2016, no maintenance is required.
