Chesterton® Custom Seal Kit Saves $30K in Cylinder Repairs
Challenge
Background
A customer received an opportunity to repair a large mining shovel cylinder. Upon further inspection, the customer noted that the wiper groove had been modified from its original dimensional specifications to a larger size. The head gland was inspected and deemed reusable; however, an OEM seal kit could not be used. The customer’s only option was to replace the gland with a new gland at the cost of $30K, jeopardising their bid to capture the end user’s repair business.

A Chesterton specialist measured the cylinder and provided a custom seal kit including a Chesterton® 21K Wiper Seal made from AWC860 high temperature polyurethane material machined to the customer’s exact equipment dimensions.

Increased Reliability
The customer was able to win the bid by using a custom Chesterton EPS Mining Kit and showing the $30K in savings created. This helped solidify the end user relationship and place Chesterton as the preferred kit vendor moving forward.
