Chesterton 860 Moldable Polymer Gasket for Condenser Flange Rubber Gasketing
Challenge
Issue
A rubber gasket was used on the flange of the condenser (manufactured in 1972), and it operated at a temperature of 32 degrees Celsius. Over time, the flange had corroded, causing leakage. With no time available to repair the flange, the rubber gasket could not stop the leakage, resulting in constant condensate leakage during operation.
860 MPG was appliedto the flanges of the body and cover, filling in the corroded areas , and conventional rubber gaskets were used in between the flanges.
Solution
Application
To repair this leakage during shutdown, Chesterton® 860 Moldable Polymer Gasketing (MPG) was selected. The flange surface was cleaned, and uneven corroded areas were repaired with Chesterton 860 MPG. A conventional rubber gasket was installed between the flanges, and the bolts were tightened to the specified torque.

Increase Reliability & Productivity
This condenser was tested for leaks and found to be fine prior to the boiler facility’s start-up. Before the improvement, when leakage occurred during post-repair testing, a crane was used to remove the flange and retighten the bolts, but this did not resolve the leakage issue.
