ARC Lining Repair for Cracks at the Bottom of a Tank
Challenge
Background
At a chemical plant, cracks developed in the concrete beneath an agitator. The equipment was exposed to both agitator vibration and frequent traffic from trucks and mixer vehicles nearby.
An internal inspection identified a risk of contaminated water leakage, with the potential for a plant shutdown depending on severity. This created an urgent and critical situation, prompting an immediate request for action.
Challenges
Previously repaired areas using commercial products developed cracks again after approximately two months. The total crack length was about 1,000 mm, including curved sections.

Solution
Preparation
- Inspect the crack area.
- Perform a V-cut on the crack (30 mm width × 20 mm depth).
- Primer Application: Fill the V-cut area with primer (Chesterton ARC 797) until fully saturated, then cover with fiberglass mesh. ARC 797: Fast-penetrating epoxy primer that bonds even to damp concrete
- Chemical-Resistant Coating Application: Chesterton ARC 988: 100% solids, chemical-resistant concrete repair material that restores the surface and helps avoid structural replacement

Results
Customer Feedback
Three months after application, no crack recurrence has been observed, confirming the effectiveness of the solution.
The rapid response was also highly valued, with the repair completed within approximately one week from initial consultation.
In addition, the performance of Chesterton products was clearly demonstrated. Notably, the primer’s curing condition and curing time showed a significant improvement compared to previously used products, earning high marks for quality.
