1.2.3 System – Oil Leak Solution for Paper Winder Cylinders
Challenge
Background
Paper mills use a pope reel to wind finished paper into rolls. Large cylinders are used to adjust the roll position.
The cylinders are subjected to side loads, causing rod misalignment and reduced packing performance. Paper dust quickly enters past the wiper, damaging internal cylinder surfaces. This resulted in 600L of hydraulic oil top-up per year, with cylinders requiring replacement every 12 months.

Solution
Rod misalignment and low operating pressure prevented the packing from sealing effectively. The existing wiper, rod, and piston seals were upgraded to Chesterton AWC800, a high-resilience material.
Low-friction bearing bands with higher compressive strength than bronze were also installed on the bronze bush and piston to improve rod alignment and stability.

Results
Improved rod alignment allowed the high-resilience packing to perform effectively.
After 3 years and 2 months, no oil leakage occurred, saving 1,900L of hydraulic oil annually and extending cylinder service life beyond 3 years and 2 months.
Approximately ¥800,000 (US$5,000) in savings were achieved before the equipment was decommissioned.
